Why you Should Get a Rain Barrel

• Reduce water pollution by keeping rain water out of the sewers.
• Reduce the amount of bacteria, oils, grease and other pollutants from getting into local waterways.
• In areas with combined sewer overflow systems, the redirection of downspouts into a rain barrel diverts excess water from wastewater treatment plants.

Rain Barrel Maintenance
After completing the connections on your new rain barrel it is important to have the correct set-up on your property.

• It is important that the overflow hose located at the bottom of the barrel is faced away from your home to prevent pooling of water at the foundation.
• Make sure the barrel is on a flat surface for proper use of the rain barrel for watering.
• If the barrel is exposed to areas of high wind, place a heavy object on the side of the debris screen so that it stays secured.

Winter Storage
Due to our seasonal climate, it is important to store your rain barrel properly over winter. Improper storage could lead to damaged parts due to the harsh winter weather. For best practices follow these steps.

1. Drain all water from the barrel, flip and let dry.
2. At minimum keep the barrel flipped downward so water does not accumulate. For best practice, store indoors or cover with a tarp.
3. Drain and disconnect the hose and store indoors.
4. Attach a longer downspout piece or use a flexible downspout extension so meltwater is directed away from the foundation once the barrel is removed.
5. It is also a good idea to clean your rain barrel of debris and buildup before storing for the winter. Bacteria can build causing foul odors and unhealthy water.
