Why you Should Get a Rain Barrel
- Reduce water pollution by keeping rain water out of the sewers.
- Reduce the amount of bacteria, oils, grease and other pollutants from getting into local waterways.
- In areas with combined sewer overflow systems, the redirection of downspouts into a rain barrel diverts excess water from wastewater treatment plants.
- Rain barrels are ideal for plants. Rainwater doesn't contain minerals, chlorine and other chemicals so it will help your plants thrive.
- Reduce peak water demand. Reducing the amount of treated municipal water used outdoors lowers the peak water demand during the summer months.
Rain Barrel Maintenance
After completing the connections on your new rain barrel it is important to have the correct set-up on your property.
- It is important that the overflow hose located at the bottom of the barrel is faced away from your home to prevent pooling of water at the foundation.
- Make sure the barrel is on a flat surface for proper use of the rain barrel for watering.
- If the barrel is exposed to areas of high wind, place a heavy object on the side of the debris screen so that it stays secured.
Winter Storage
Due to our seasonal climate, it is important to store your rain barrel properly over winter. Improper storage could lead to damaged parts due to the harsh winter weather. For best practices follow these steps.
- Drain all water from the barrel, flip and let dry.
- At minimum keep the barrel flipped downward so water does not accumulate. For best practice, store indoors or cover with a tarp.
- Drain and disconnect the hose and store indoors.
- Attach a longer downspout piece or use a flexible downspout extension so meltwater is directed away from the foundation once the barrel is removed.
- It is also a good idea to clean your rain barrel of debris and buildup before storing for the winter. Bacteria can build causing foul odors and unhealthy water.
-----
In production for over 25 years, Rain Catcher rain barrels are the gold standard for rain water collection with over 375,000 barrels sold across North America.
Designed to mimic a traditional wooden barrel the Raincatcher line of rain barrels have many modern features not found in a basic barrel.
- The large opening and flat back design allow for easy installation and placement of the downspout while the spoke and wheel pattern in the top of the barrel keeps it child and pet safe.
- The overflow connection at the back of the barrel allows excess water to flow down and underneath the barrel to direct it away from foundations.
- Spigots on the side of the barrel allow you to connect multiple Rain Catcher barrels in-series for easy expansion of your rain water storage capacity.
- The aluminum mesh screen keeps out debris to keep the water clear.
Place them around your home to catch fresh chlorine-free water as it pours from your downspouts - Water that would otherwise make its way into storm sewers only to be wasted. Rain barrels not only save you money but lessen the strain on water resources.
- The barrels are constructed of recycled, UV inhibited, BPA free polyethylene.
- Includes debris screen, garden hose, shut-off thumb valve, hanging hose clip, overflow hose, and linking kit
